Every school has a village already organized, and most families are never properly invited: the PTA or PTSA, the association of parents and teachers that meets in the evenings and holds more of the school's real life than its bake-sale reputation admits. Here is the proper invitation. Membership is open to any adult who cares about the school's children: parents, grandparents, aunties, the neighbor who walks your kids home. Dues are small and waivable, and asking for the waiver is normal. No office, election, or committee is required; walking in is joining, and bringing a dish is a complete membership strategy. It is where your one-morning-a-month presence gains company, where you know other parents before the hard year comes instead of during it, and where your language belongs (interpretation is a reasonable ask, and bilingual families often become the bridge the whole school needed). And a second door too few families are shown: if your child has an IEP or is being evaluated, there are PTAs specifically for special education families, like the Seattle Special Education PTSA, a room where every other parent has also sat in the IEP meeting, the acronyms come pre-translated, and the collective voice reaches the district in ways one family's cannot. Other districts have their own; the case manager or front office can name yours. You do not have to run anything. You just have to come. The village works best organized, and it is already meeting on a Tuesday near you.
